Diakonhjemmet Hospital is an ideal, non-profit corporation owned by the Diakonhjemmet Foundation. The hospital is responsible for general hospital services for approximately 150 000 inhabitants in particular sectors of the western part of Oslo, within the fields of internal medicine, surgery, mental health and radiology, as well as laboratory services. In addition, the hospital is responsible for treating older people with hip fractures from a larger area of Oslo.

The hospital is also responsible for psychiatric care within its sector, and for geriatric psychiatry towards a large sector of Oslo. All treatment is given within the frames of the official health services in Oslo, and based on an agreement with the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority (Helse Sør-Øst).

*Center for Psychopharmacology (SFP) is the only national center of expertise in therapeutic drug monitoring and pharmacogenetic analysis, and research in psychopharmacology and biological psychiatry. SFP has an accreditation from the NA (Norwegian Accreditation).​

Diakonhjemmet Hospital specializes in the fields of rheumatology and rheumatic surgery. It is the referral hospital for the Oslo area and the regional hospital for Southeastern Norway for health services in the fields of rheumatology and rheumatic surgery.​​ 

The Norwegian information service "Fritt sykehusvalg Norge" (Free Hospital Choice Norway) supports the government's goal of facilitating patients' rights to choose where to receive medical treatment. Requests concering change of appointment sent by e-mail, will not be answered or forwarded.

​All r​equests conserning treatment in the hospital must be handled by your family doctor/general practitioner, who will send a referral to the hospital according to current guidelines.
